The Use of FANUC Machines by the U.S.P.S.
Fanuc Robots Handling Your Mail
Many think Fanuc machines are only a part of the manufacturing industry. But did you know even the United States Postal Service utilizes Fanuc robots handle your mail?
In 2009 alone, about 177 billion pieces of mail were processed by the United States Postal Service. This time-consuming task required hours of labor, now streamlined thanks to Fanuc machines. In the year 2000, about 1,000 robots were installed worldwide at postal centers to assist with the sorting and packing of outgoing mail.
However, the Fanuc machines used required alteration, due to the size variety of mail pieces and the stacking problems encountered. Traditional Fanuc machines used for manufacturing deal with the same sized pieces and equipment, making the process simpler. With a variety of mail sizes and the tray quality, USPS was required to make modifications in order for the machines to succeed. The adjustment developed was the vacuum cup lifting system, the best way found to process the mail trays, known to bend, fold, and stack unevenly.
As of 2002, about 5-10% of our mail is handled robotically, mostly outgoing mail. New developments with Fanuc machines over the past few years and in the near future, has the USPS looking at ways for these Fanuc machines to also handle incoming mail, to reduce even further the manpower needed.
